Historic Assumption Church is travelling down the road to repair, as evidenced Friday when a public viewing showcased the latest $1.5-million phase of restoration for the 175-year-old landmark.

“It’s all very positive,” said local lawyer Paul Mullins, who has been leading efforts to save the church. “We have completed plaster work on the east-side wall, ceiling work is being completed, plus insulation on that side of the church.”

R&H Painting of Windsor is currently restoring and repainting much of the ornate trim throughout the church and ceiling.

“We are very encouraged by how that’s turning out,” Mullins said.

The crumbling church was shuttered in 2014 due to its unsafe condition. Supporters were fearful sufficient funds could not be raised to save the church, located at University Avenue and Huron Church Road.

A huge step in saving the church required raising enough funds for the initial phase of repairs — that included a new copper roof, asbestos removal and installing a new heating system —that started in late 2018. The Diocese of London contributed $1 million.

The church was able to reopen in September 2019 and regular mass resumed.

Seeing the first phase of renovation work being completed on the church has seemingly triggered a handful of new major donations, ranging from $10,000 to $100,000, that fully covered costs for the current renovation phase, Mullins said.

“It all added up to money we needed to complete the work we are doing now on the east side of the church,” he said. “Now we are starting work to raise money for the west side.”

That next phase to restore that side of the church is projected to cost $1.25 million — a fundraising goal Mullins is hopeful to achieve by Easter.

“Everything to date has been really encouraging and the support we are getting has been gratifying,” Mullins said.

“We are going to see this through and hope things will continue forward. Our only issue is funding. We can only go as fast on this as we can raise sufficient funds.”
