Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is using undemocratic tools to circumvent Parliament as he continues his hunt for firearms that aren’t hurting anybody.

Back in May, the Liberal government tabled legislation that would have halted the importation, purchase, sale and transfer of handguns in Canada.

The law didn’t pass when Parliament began its summer break. But it remains in the legislative process and will be debated again and voted on once MPs return in the fall.

It’s clear to most Canadians by now that to the degree we have a firearms problem in Canada, it is not caused by legal firearms. They play a negligible role in gun crimes in this country.

The problem is firearms imported illegally into Canada. Everyone knows that.

Yet the Liberals are so seized with their magical thinking that they’re now circumventing their own legislative process in their zeal to go after firearms.

On Friday, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino announced the feds are using a unilateral regulatory measure to bring the ban into effect before Parliament has been able to vote on it.

The Canadian Press reports that: “The temporary ban will prevent businesses from importing handguns into Canada, with a few exceptions that mirror those in the legislation tabled in May.”

Mendicino stated: “Given that nearly all our handguns are imported, this means that we’re bringing our national handgun freeze even sooner… From that moment forward, the number of handguns in Canada will only go down.”

Hold on a second. When he talks about imported handguns, he means the ones that are legally sold. It’s also true that illegal handguns are imported (illegally) but that’s not what’s being addressed.

There should be a rule that for every symbolic, useless gun measure introduced by the Trudeau government, they need to announce 10 more that will actually play a role in reducing gun violence.

They don’t seem to have an appetite for that though.

What is the goal here? If the goal is to just whip up their urban elite base into a frenzy over firearms ownership, then all of their meaningless gesture likely accomplish that goal.

If the goal is reducing crime though, this isn’t the way.
