Barbados Celebrates Becoming A Republic For First Time In History

The Caribbean island of Barbados on Monday became a republic and replaced Queen Elizabeth II as head of state. Barbados Governor General Sandra Mason, who was appointed by the queen, was sworn in as president shortly after midnight on Tuesday, which marks the island’s 55th independence from Britain.
