Look: Golfer Withdraws From Masters To Focus On Mental Health
The 89-man field for the 2023 Masters has shrunk by one today as one of the invited golfers has reportedly withdrawn.
Taking to Instagram on Friday, golfer Aaron Wise announced that he is withdrawing from the tournament due to mental health issues. He said that he needs to take some time away in order to get "back to competing at a level I am proud of."
"Regretfully, I am withdrawing from The Masters today. Golf is just as much a mental game as it is one of physical skill, and the mental piece of it has been a struggle for me recently. I don’t take the significance of playing at Augusta lightly, but know that I need to take some time away to focus on my mental health so I can get back to competing at a level I am proud of,” Wise wrote. “This hurts, but it’s needed. See you all soon,”
Wise was set to join the Masters for the first time since 2019 and only the second time in his career. But wins have been hard to come by in recent years.
The former 2018 Rookie of the Year had been surging lately, climbing all the way to 33 in the World Golf Ranking last week - his highest ranking ever.
Last year Wise made the cut in all three of the majors he was invited to - 23 at the PGA Championship, 27 at the U.S. Open and 34 at the Open Championship.
Aaron Wise has not won a PGA Tour event since the 2018 AT&T Byron Nelson. He has three career wins but won't be getting his fourth at Augusta this year.
