In photos: New Year's supermoon

Photos Logo Photos | Slide 1 of 58: Supermoon rises over Chicago, Illinois, United States on January 01, 2018. Supermoons happen when a full moon approximately coincides with the moon's perigee, or a point in its orbit at which it is closest to Earth.

The first moon of 2018 was also the first supermoon of the year. A supermoon — when the full moon is closest to the earth – occurs about once in every 14 full moons. The next one will happen on Jan. 31, 2018, coinciding with a lunar eclipse.
