How to make money on a classic car

Rare classic cars were in the news this week when it was revealed that the Foxtons estate agents billionaire Jon Hunt was suing upmarket car dealer HR Owen following a fire that destroyed his classic and rare Lamborghini Miura, now worth almost £1 million.

The story highlighted how classic cars are rapidly becoming a great way to make money, but knowing which ones to invest in is the key. Auctions are one source and Coys auction house is holding a classic car sale on December 2, where the old metal up for sale includes this gorgeous 1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint Speciale 1600. It's likely to fetch at least £80,000.

Chris Routledge, managing partner at Coys, said: “Classic cars have been a phenomenal investment and this appears to be continuing – we’ve seen more and more people talking to us about cars as an investment as well as something that they can drive and enjoy.”

But for those of us not billionaires and on a tighter budget we've selected 25 cars that are cheap to buy now, but which could be worth a lot more in years to come. We've set a budget of £5,000, but remember: these prices are for guidance only and there’s no guarantee these cars will go up in value...
