Costa drive thru plan sparks fears 'entitled generation in 4x4s seeking branded coffee' will increase traffic

A drive-through Costa Coffee shop could soon be built next to a recently-opened Aldi supermarket. Plans have been submitted which would see the shop built next to discount retailer's new store in Tarleton.

That store only opened in July as part of a plan which should have seen offices built on the same land. The wider development was only made possible thanks to the demolition of the historic Bay Leaf restaurant.

Under the original approval, Tarleton-firm GBA Services was going to build a two-storey office building next to the supermarket. However, thanks to the increase in home-working which has continued since the pandemic, GBA says it no longer needs the new premises and has submitted the alternative proposal to West Lancashire Borough Council.

If approved, the new shop will offer sit-in and drive-thru options with 22 parking spaces.

While the coffee shop is likely to prove popular with visitors to the supermarket, the plan has already caused some concern amid unhappiness over changes in the area since Aldi opened. Writing a formal objection, one neighbour said she has lived in Tarleton for more than two decades and feared the village was no longer the same.

She said: "There has already been an increase in the number of cars due to Aldi opening, this will only further impact the local community, at what is already a hazardous exit point onto the A59 heading towards the village. Cars turning right, exiting Aldi, are pulling out in front of traffic also heading towards Tarleton, and now you want to add more. Absolutely unbelievable.

"We do not need another coffee shop in Tarleton, especially a drive thru, when there are already several excellent coffee shops in the village. Please think about the local traders, increased traffic and air pollution from cars queuing at a drive thru, just so that some of the 'entitled' generation round here can drive their huge 4x4's to get their 'branded' coffee.

"Sorry about the rant, but Tarleton is no longer the village I moved to 22 years ago, it is being swallowed up by excessive house building and national chains, who have no thought for the local area, and obviously a council who are happy to accommodate these companies."

A report submitted with the application states that although the proposed store falls within the Green Belt area, it is still compliant with the relevant policies. It also says the coffee shop will be smaller than the previously planned offices.

It concludes: "The proposal seeks to introduce an internationally recognised coffee chain to a fast growing area where there is demand for a drive-thru coffee shop. In doing so, it would also provide new job opportunities and assist the local council in realising its economic goals as per the local plan."
