Huge swirling waterspout tornado forms off the coast of Thailand This is the terrifying moment a swirling giant waterspout tornado formed off the coast of southern Thailand. Dark grey clouds gathered around a mile from the shore in Trat province on Sunday morning (April 11) as winds suddenly picked up. Locals watched in amazement as the elephant trunk-shaped tornado formed, stretching down from the gloomy clouds above into the sea below. Footage shows how the tornado sucked up seawater into the vortex as the mass of storm clouds also began spinning. Resident Awirut said: ‘I was scared when I saw the tornado. I thought it would come towards the beach and damage lots of homes. It was so big, it reminded me of an American movie. ‘It was the biggest tornado I’ve ever seen in the area. We have a lot of rainstorms, but nothing as big as this. Some people were running away they were so worried.’ Waterspouts are tornadoes that form over water. They are intense columns of swirling clouds that stretch from the surface to the clouds above. They are most commonly found in subtropical areas and disappear shortly after they come into contact with land. Waterspouts are generally not dangerous but they can be a risk for aircraft flying through the area and for coral reefs and marine life in the water immediately below. Sailors should also try to avoid waterspouts – as the consequences of floating into one could be disastrous. The most common type of waterspout is a ‘fair weather waterspout’. They happen when winds merge from opposite directions near the water’s surface, creating a small area of spin. Sudden warm air at the surface, usually from a thunderstorm, causes the spinning air to rotate faster and it starts to rise – picking up water at the same time. Sometimes the air spins so fast that it stretches and a funnel appears from the water to the thunderstorm cloud above.

Russian, 42, arrested after ‘selling meth to tourists and prostitutes in Thailand’ A Russian man was arrested after allegedly selling meth to tourists and hookers in return for sexual services in Thailand. Garanin Konstantin, 45, was caught by undercover police selling the drugs during a buy-bust operation in his apartment in tourism destination Pattaya in Chonburi province on April 8. Police said that they bought 0.75 grams of meth from Konstantin for 1,000 baht, which was marked. Officers continued to search the property and found assorted drug paraphernalia and more meth weighing 0.82 grams hidden under the table. The police also seized assets worth five million baht that were believed to have been illegally acquired by using a local’s identity The Russian expat reportedly first arrived in the country six years ago when he started his illegal drug ring targeting foreigners and prostitutes. Police Senior Colonel Adulayaphat Taephonchayasit said that the ex-pat would allegedly ask the female hookers for sexual favours instead of money in return for the meth, also known locally as ‘Ice’. He said: ‘He was known for selling drugs to tourists and prostitutes. He would ask the women for sexual favours in exchange for the substances. ‘We immediately planned the buy-bust and raided his property after confirming the reports tipped to us by our operatives.’ Garanin was taken to the police station where he was charged with the possession and illegal trade of crystal methamphetamine and marijuana.

Plucky stray cat named Sushi survives bite from deadly cobra A super-strong stray cat survived being bitten by a COBRA after trying to chase the snake away from an office block in Thailand. The white moggie named Sushi was found limping on the pavement after fighting with the reptile without success in front of the property in Bangkok on April 5. Office worker Sathaporn Pearnon Sathaporn Pearnon, who had grown fond of the stray, noticed she was injured on one of her hind legs so he stopped to help the animal. As he tried to lure the weak cat closer, he was shocked upon seeing the venomous cobra nearby spreading its hood appearing to be ready to attack. Sathaporn said he escaped with the cat and rushed her to a nearby veterinary clinic before informing his co-workers about the snake outside their building. He said: ‘This cat usually comes to our office during lunchtime so we give her some food. We named her Sushi because she was cute and gentle. ‘I noticed she was weak and injured so I went to have a look. I was shocked when I saw the cobra nearby. I realised the cat was bitten and could die any moment.’ The animal lover told medics what happened and gave the cat emergency treatment. She quickly stabilised and the snake venom was neutralised. Vets were amazed that Sushi was able to withstand the venom for that long but they still required the stray to stay in their facility for three days. Sathaporn thanked the vets and adopted the cat after it was discharged. He added: ‘Sushi has been recovering and it seems like she is back to normal now. I think she will be a lot more careful if she sees a snake and run away instead of trying to fight it.’ The snake is believed to be a species of cobra known as a monocled cobra. Their venom is strong enough to kill a human with a single bite and they are responsible for thousands of deaths every year across Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent.
