Ever since that teasy Easter egg at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, fans have been desperate to see Adam Warlock pop up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While he is yet to materialise, many have still been holding out hope for an appearance in the third Guardians movie, with Zac Efron proving a fan-favourite dream casting.

However, director James Gunn has shut down this possibility in an Instagram Q&A, directly addressing one fan who asked whether Efron had been cast.

"I never even said there was going to be an Adam Warlock," he said. "And NO ONE has been cast in Vol 3 except the actors already in the movies."

Fans had previously hoped that Warlock would turn up in Avengers: Endgame, especially as he proves crucial to the defeat of Thanos in the comics.

However, the movie's writers have admitted they never planned to include him, with Stephen McFeely saying recently: "Never – never. The logic right here was to honour the MCU as how it had already existed and the characters you'd already fallen in love with.

"We did not want to give too much story space to introducing a whole new person. It would rob you from somebody."

Efron isn't the only big name that has been linked with Vol 3, with Robert Pattinson previously being rumoured for a role too.

However, Gunn has also denied this, saying all the chatter about the Batman star being eyed up is "definitely not" true.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol 1 and vol 2 are available now.
