Leicestershire’s Tom Hopper could become the frontrunner for the next 007 after a list of strict requirements ruled out the bookies’ favourites.

Tom, who was born and grew up in Coalville, has been among the leading pack of names to succeed Daniel Craig for several months, but is currently trailing behind Luther star Idris Elba as well as Tom Hardy for the role. However, this may now have changed after a list of actor 'mandates' was revealed, putting some of the top names out of the running, reports the Express.

If true, Tom could soon move back into pole position in the odds to get the ‘licence to kill’, but his competition remains tough for the coveted job.

The requirements, which are said to have come directly from 007 producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, were revealed by ITV’s entertainment correspondent Ross King on the Lorraine programme. He said the Bond team was now looking to recruit someone for the long-term and was specific in what the new actor should be.

“The latest rumour - and in some ways part of this is very much true - which is, basically, the Bond producers are looking for a younger Bond. Someone probably in their 30s,” he said.

“At the end of the day they want someone who will be Bond for the next three movies. For the franchise, they want someone who will carry it through the same way Daniel Craig did it.”

For Tom, who remains a 20-1 bet with bookmakers, he is currently 37, meaning he meets the mandate, but bookies’ favourites Idris Elba and Tom Hardy, who are 49 and 44 respectively, would be ruled out. Superman star Henry Cavill, who turns 40 next year, might also miss out as filming will not start for some time.

If age wasn’t enough, Mr King said the 007 team were also specific in one other department - height. He said: “The other thing they’re saying is they have to be taller than 5ft 10ins.”

That is good news for Tom, who currently stars as Luther Hargreeves in Netflix’s Umbrella Academy, as he stands at 6ft 5ins tall. However, other Bond rivals, Regé-Jean Page, James Norton and Aidan Turner remain in the running on height alone.

Latest betting odds have yet to be been affected by the news, with Idris Elba (9/2), Rege-Jean Page (11/2) and Henry Cavill (10/3) the unchanged top three. Tom is 12th on the list, but nothing has been sorted yet according to Ms Broccoli.

Speaking to the BFI, she said: “Nobody’s in the running. We’re working out where to go with him, we’re talking that through.

“There isn’t a script and we can’t come up with one until we decide how we’re going to approach the next film because, really, it’s a reinvention of Bond. We’re reinventing who he is and that takes time. I’d say that filming is at least two years away.”
