Australian political journalist Laura Tingle and Kiwi Hollywood actor Sam Neill are in a 'serious' relationship - and it all seems to have started on Twitter

Tingle and Neill reportedly met through friends late last year, and began dating publicly last month.

But exchanges between the pair began on the social media platform in March, with Neill tagging his new sweetheart in a post where he claimed he was not allowed into Malcolm Turnbull's victory party after the election.

'Perhaps the Libs have a thing about beards', he lamented.

'Evidence suggests they have a thing about talent,' she cheekily responded.

The pair had been in contact long before their initial meeting, with tweets dating back to early 2017 showing the pair had developed a flirtatious friendship

In April, SBS Rockwiz host Julia Zemiro joked about setting the pair up on a remake of Thunderbirds, where she would play Lady Penelope from Thunderbirds, and Neill would play Parker, the chauffeur.

In the original version of the television show, Lady Penelope and Parker appear together in every episode but one.

'Works for me,' Tingle enthusiastically responded, adding: 'As do chauffeurs uniforms'.

Just two months earlier, Tingle, 56, had told Zemiro she 'loved' the episode where the SBS journalist interviewed Neill, 70.

Tingle is a veteran journalist who covers politics for the Australian Financial Review. Neill appears to share her interest, and often tags her in his political tweets

In May, she appeared to divulge an inside joke between the pair when she tweeted an article about a hobby horse championship, 'ping'ing in the Jurassic Park star.

Neill soared to fame after his appearance opposite Judy Davis in My Brilliant Career.

Perhaps acting the proud girlfriend, Tingle tweeted a photo of the book which inspired the famous film, noting she had found it during a clean up of her possessions.

The edition of the novel was released after the movie, and sported Neill's face on the cover. Tingle ended the post by tagging her new beau and using the hashtag 'aw'.

In August, Tingle revealed she had a late edition of the book which, in film form, made her new beau famous

Neill has starred in films such as My Beautiful Career and Jurassic Park

The pair also appeared to have developed inside jokes as early as May last year, with Tingle bizarrely tagging Neill in a post about hobby horses

When a follower claimed she was 'desperately in love' with the Hollywood actor after the film came out, the Financial Review reporter responded: 'You're only human.'

Less than a week later, Neill shared an article about Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce being of New Zealand descent, tagging Tingle at the end.

A friend of the couple told The Australian the relationship was 'serious', and that the pair had met through mutual friends.

However The Brisbane Times reported the pair had met after Neill reached out to the Insiders regular after he saw her on television.

Laura Tingle declined to comment on the relationship to Daily Mail Australia.

The journalist joked with another woman online about being 'desperately in love' with the actor turned winemaker
