'Maverick' becomes the first $1 billion Tom Cruise movie
The 'Top Gun' sequel is the second highest grossing film for Paramount Studios, behind 'Titanic' (1997). The film opened over the Memorial Day weekend. Positive word of mouth is widely attributed for its box office success. "It's rare to get the special kind of alchemy that creates a true event film, and we have been absolutely blown away by the global response." Brian Robbins, Paramount Pictures' President and CEO, via CNN. Analysts say crossing the billion dollar mark is huge for any film.
