Nearly a year after the adaptation of author Bernard Cornwell's Saxon Stories novels finished up its second series on BBC Two, co-producer Netflix has breathed new life into the series.

Netflix came aboard as co-producer with the BBC for The Last Kingdom's second series, after the Beeb's North American partners at BBC America dropped out.

Now, Netflix is just taking over the whole show, announcing that it will be the exclusive home of ten episodes bringing back Alexander Dreymon as the righteous Saxon warrior Uhtred of Bebbanburg.

Dreymon announced the big news himself on Twitter, telling fans: "As you can see, the rumours are true! I'm on the set of The Last Kingdom and season three is well underway. I think it's going to be the best season yet."

Also returning for the new episodes will be familiar faces Ian Hart (Father Beocca), David Dawson (King Alfred), Emily Cox (Brida) and, of course, Tobias Santelmann (Ragnar the Younger).

The third season will continue Uhtred's quest to recapture his ancestral homeland of Bebbanburg and drive out the Danish hordes once and for all. Stephen Butchard returns as leading screenwriter, after taking a break to adapt BBC One's The Child in Time with Benedict Cumberbatch last year.

The Last Kingdom doesn't have an official premiere date yet, but it will be returning at some point this year on Netflix worldwide.
