season five will be arriving in the near future and the series will continue to follow protagonist Uhtred (played by Alexander Dreymon). In the fourth season, he attempted to claim back his homeland of Bebbanburg from his uncle Aelfric (Joseph Millson) and cousin Wihtgar (Ossian Perret). Fans are hoping he has more luck in the upcoming season and they have taken to the internet to discuss the new plot.

The Last Kingdom season five will be based on two of The Saxon Stories novels by author Bernard Cornwell.

Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer are the ninth and 10th books in the historical series.

The TV adaptation tells the story of Uhtred, who was born a Saxon but was raised by Danes.

He was torn away from his homeland as a child and in season four, he attempted to sail back with an army.

Sadly he was defeated by his evil cousin Wihtgar, who killed Uhtred's best friend, Father Beocca (Ian Hart).

Uhtred is expected to make another attempt to win back Bebbanburg in the upcoming season.

At this moment in time, it looks as if this may feature in one of the final episodes of season five.

The new season is likely to open with Uhtred training Aethelstan (Caspar Griffiths), the son of King Edward (Timothy Innes).

At the end of season four, Uhtred was left to look after Aethelstan and protect him as the next heir to the Wessex throne.

He is likely to be caught up in this plot for the majority of season five as the unification of England draws ever closer.

Fans do, however, hope he will get a chance to visit his home again before the end of the season.

Taking to Reddit, one fan said: "I really hope Uhtred gets Bebbanburg back in season five," to which another fan replied: "He has to surely!

"He's really running out of reasons to stay in Wessex at this point."

Uhtred has always pledged his allegiance to the Saxons as he supported King Alfred's (David Dawson) desire for peace and unification.

Sadly his relationship with Saxon Lady Aethelflaed (Millie Brady) broke down after she became ruler of Mercia.

Another viewer said: "They just keep screwing him over it's so annoying, he literally risked his life for all of them.

"It's time he goes and gets Bebbanburg back." Many fans have supported the theory that Uhtred will finally see victory at the end of season five.

Some who have read the books have pointed out how Uhtred claims back Bebbanburg in The Flame Bearer.

If the TV adaptation continues to follow the source material, hopefully these events will play out in the fifth installment.

No release date has been given yet, but filming began at the end of 2020, so fans can hope for a late 2021 release date.

After the release of season four, actor Dreymon teased the Bebbanburg storyline and what fans could expect.

He said: "He's lived his whole life believing that Bebbanburg was his destiny and when that doesn't turn out how he expected it to, it turns his world upside down.

"His world view doesn't make sense anymore. That along with the death of Beocca. It's difficult to find your purpose again after that."

Actor Millson, who plays Aelfric, described the relationship between the Uhtred and Wihtgar actors during the Bebbanburg scenes.

He said: "Ossian is a force of nature. He's a find, I tell you. I suspect he'll be going a lot of places.

"He's got more energy than you can keep on camera. He's fantastic."

The Last Kingdom is streaming on Netflix now.
