Belfast has been ranked as one of the most vegan-friendly cities in the UK, in a new survey by energy saving site Save On Energy.

The site put together a Vegan Index, which took into account a variety of different factors to create one overall score for each city and how friendly they are for vegans.

The study investigates: the number of vegan-friendly restaurants in a city; the number of organic health food shops; the number of vegan supplement stores; and the number of vegan-related searches, on average, are made per month in each city.

The survey gave Belfast a high rating, placing it just below Bristol (1st), London (2nd) and Edinburgh (3rd), in terms of how friendly it is for vegans.

The survey said: "Residents in Belfast have the most organic health shops of all cities studied (19), the third-highest number of vegan supplement stores (15) and is home to 198 vegan-friendly eateries."

For those who have made the lifestyle switch to becoming vegans, this will be no surprise. Organic health shops in Belfast like Eatwell Foods and Goodness Natural Health Food Store are go-to places for vegans. Elsewhere, stores like The Nutmeg are perfect for your vegan essentials.

And there's plenty of vegan eateries in Belfast as well - you can find a list of some of our favourites here.

The survey ranked Belfast low on its list of how many residents make vegan-related searches per month, showing that while the vegan interest is strong, it's not as strong here as it is in other parts of the UK.

Wider research also showed that approximately 12 million people in the UK – around 23% of the population – say that they will be vegetarian, vegan or pescatarian by 2021, with the number of people claiming to be vegan soaring by 62% in 2019.
