Council's own leisure centre now in spotlight of its investigation into smoothie health benefit boasts

Wrexham Council officers are probing whether smoothies being sold at its own leisure centre have the health benefits they claim.

Love Taste Company, which supplies frozen fruit smoothies sachets to Waterworld Freedom Leisure Centre, is being investigated over concerns three of its 12 drinks are misleading consumers.

Smoothies including 'Doctor Beet' and 'Detox-zing' are understood to have been removed from the menu while the probe is underway, but it is not clear which other drink is being probed.

The 'Hangover', 'Skinny Jeans', the 'Energizer', the 'Antioxidant', the 'Cold Buster', the 'Detox' and the 'Brain Booster' are all currently being probed, according to owners, Leanne and Gareth Roberts.

Mr Roberts was required to attended a meeting under caution with officers from the local authority's Trading Standards last month to investigate whether the business has committed any offences under the nutrition and food safety legislation.

The juice bar has now Juice bar facing probe over drink names including 'brain booster' and 'skinny jeans' to close which they say left them feeling "bullied" and "victimised".

Managing director of Love Taste Company, Phil Plowman, said he understood an investigation has been launched. He said: "We are aware of a potential issue being raised by Wrexham council.

"The next stage, if required, would be for us to receive specific details from the council."

A spokeswoman for Waterworld Freedom Leisure Centre, which is run in partnership with the council, said: "Wrexham Waterworld is working with the local Public Protection department to check that third-party smoothie products sold at the centre are compliant."

She added the probe is believed to have launched earlier this month and as a result, the centre has removed the three drinks from the menu while the investigation is underway.

Wrexham council , iwhich is understood to be working with the supplier's local authority as part of the probe, said it could not disclose who it is investigating and could not comment any furher.
