Post office services have returned to a Leicester suburb five years after they left. It is a move that bosses say will help the community and make services convenient.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Beaumont Leys Post Office took place last Friday (November 4) with Leicester West MP Liz Kendall doing the honours. The new post office can be found in Unit SU8A, by the entrance to the Beaumont Shopping Centre, and is the area’s first service for five years.

The site is the second location to be run by its owners, Ricky and Raj Ghuman, who also run an outlet in Thrapston, in Northamptonshire. They said the opportunity came up after Mr Ghuman was walking through the shopping centre and spotted the vacant unit.

Believing that it would be a “great place", they put in the application and got the go-ahead earlier this year to transform the site and make it a Post Office. The site sells stationery and stamps as well as offering photo printing for all customers, with the unit accessible for all, according to Mr Ghuman.

He said: “There is a roller frontage to the store, so the premises fully opens up making it easy for people with mobility scooters, shopping-trolleys on wheels and those with prams and pushchairs to get around. The aisles in the shop are wide and with clean lines, making it easy to manoeuvre. People have been very impressed.”

The new Beaumont Leys Post Office will open 58 hours a week, running from 9am till 6pm on Monday to Saturdays. It will open between 10am and 2pm on Sundays.

Alongside main Post Office services, the new unit will also support locally-made produce, including samosas and sandwiches to take away. Free wifi and mobile phone charging ports are also available in store.

Leicester West MP Liz Kendall said: “Congratulations to Ricky and Raj Ghuman for spotting a great location to re-open Beaumont Post Office. There is lots of free parking, which makes it very convenient to visit. Being close to the entrance makes it easy for people with parcels and for people popping in to do all of their banking. The whole store looks great and it is very accessible.”

Simon Revill, manager of the Beaumont shopping Centre, added: “We are thrilled to welcome the Post Office to the Centre. As a community shopping destination, the Post Office will provide a number of key services for our customers, and we wish Ricky and his team every success.”
