Surrounded by towering mountain tops and the stunning beauty of the south Wales valleys, the location of this house for sale is something special.

At the end of a typical and traditional row of valleys terraced homes you will find this newly improved property, given a new lease of life during lockdown. The period property is also located near the top end of the Rhondda Fawr valley, before the main road climbs the hillside of the Rhigos mountain, revealing stunning, panoramic views over the Rhondda valley on one side and the Cynon valley on the other.

But the views inside this house are pretty special too. The current owners have spent time, money and creative energy on creating a super-stylish, calming collection of spaces to enjoy. Unless you feel the need to splash some accents of hot colour, this cute abode needs no decorative work; the new owner can just park up and unpack. No DIY and paint brushes needed here.

The pretty cream and white facade greets you and, coupled with the multi-paned windows, offers a smart start to any property tour and surely raises the anticipation of any potential buyer of the standard of interior design they might find inside.

But it hasn't always been like this, even though the current owner says she has owned the property for many years.

Owner Paula Luke says: "It was very old fashioned when we purchased it about 15 years ago, but an elderly gentleman was renting it and that suited him perfectly as he hated any modern gadgets!

"But then it was without a tenant for many years so we decided to renovate it during lockdown.

"Our plan originally was to rent it out as an Airbnb as the area is outstanding for walkers as it's at the top of Rhigos Mountain and Zip World Tower is opening on the mountain soon.

"As the property had been empty for many years it had become in a bad state of repair and needed most things done but we couldn't wait to get stuck into it.

"My husband is very handy and apart from the plumbing and kitchen he could do most of the work himself."

So during the first coronavirus pandemic lockdown period in spring 2020, the couple had the time and the skills to renovate the house to a standard that made them feel proud of the transformation from dated to desirable.

First came some of the major system updates, before the couple could even contemplate choice of paint colours.

Paula says: "We needed firstly to get heat on in the property so had a new central heating system and boiler installed, took out the old Baxi fireplace and installed a totally new system."

But there was one feature that Paula and husband Neil loved and wanted to keep, even though many homeowners would have happily destroyed it with a sledgehammer; the old stone fireplace and chimney breast.

In fact Paula hasn't just kept this classic 1970s feature, she has cleverly used it to inspire the majority of the Scandi-inspired interior design in the house.

She says: "We simply love the fireplace and based our decor around this, we left it open so that the new owners can fit whatever they want."

The spacious open-plan lounge is the first room you discover as you visit the terraced home, and it's the room that starts the design journey that mixes styles so each room has a personality but flows and has a connection to the others.

Paula says: "One of my favourite interior designers is Joanna Gaines as her style is modern but comfortable and not stuffy.

"She mixes styles so well, so we based the downstairs of the property on this using a bit of industrial but adding some farmhouse and Scandi."

From the outside a cute, traditional valleys terrace can sometimes give people the impression that the spaces inside are small and dark, but there's none of that at this home.

The open-plan living room combines the two former reception rooms into one and is light and bright space based in neutral and natural shades.

But it's not bland, it has layers of added texture, not just from the fireplace and wood logs, but the use of natural materials such as cotton, wool and canvas via the soft furnishings and accessorises.

The nature inspired decor is further enhanced by the contrasting accent shades of navy blue and the over-sized, black feature ceiling lights as features to add tonal interest.

Paula says: "The fireplace is the main hero of the room in the lounge so we used white linen sofas with a mix of linen cushions to complement it.

"I love Farrow and Ball Wevet so we have used this colour in many places and I found a beautiful concrete paint by Craig and Rose which we used for a feature wall."

It is also important in a terrace to thinking about using every single space available, to utilises the home's potential, but not by crowding it with as much storage, accessories and additions as possible; sometimes less is more.

If you do open up a space, for example under the stairs, it is important to think about zoning areas within the larger room you have now created.

Maintaining the same standard of interior style is important so each space becomes an integral part of the overall visual experience but has an obvious, defined zoned function of its own.

Paula has achieved this successfully by opening up that usually unloved space under the stairs and created an office area, which will be very popular with people working from home due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Where others might have not given this space as much thought as the lounging area of the room, it is important that it is designed with just as much care, so this space does not dominate the opposite lounge space with work thoughts and atmosphere. A lounge is for relaxing.

The study area under the stairs effortlessly blends with the rest of the house with the continuation of the white wall backdrop, use of natural materials and tasteful and not over-fussy accessorising.

It is also an example of Paula and her partner reminding any visitor that they don't take themselves too seriously.

The wall clocks in the office area, so often found in offices displaying the time of major cities around the world, is proudly letting everyone know the current time in Treherbert at the base of the Rhigos mountain and the time in the south of France at the Mont Ventoux mountain.

It's quirky, personal touches like this that make a house a home.

For such a cute house it's a delight to see the owners have redesigned the space to include a sociable dining area in the kitchen at the rear.

Paula says: "We used a classic white wooden kitchen from Howdens with an oak worktop and I wanted to use copper and metallics as the highlighting feature in this room, to warm it up.

"I particularly love my wall mounted craft paper roll dispenser that I planned to use to welcome guests.

"I saw the design on Etsy USA but I couldn't get anything in the UK that used the copper and cognac brown leather which I so wanted, I also didn't want to pay over £150 to buy and import it in so my husband made it for me and I am delighted with the result."

The kitchen is light and bright and uses a clever mix of materials to bring layers of texture to the space and create multiple points of visual interest.

Smooth worktops, shiny metallics, soft plant foliage, tactile wall tiles, and even the wallpaper - a design that brings the essence of white-washed beach hut boarding into the room - makes you want to touch and stroke each surface it.

Choice of furniture again focuses on making a design classic the statement, with the chairs an homage to the timeless and instantly recognisable Charles Eames' DSW chair, which has graced many a dining room since its launch in the 1950s.

But Paula says her favourite room of the house is definitely the bathroom.

She says: "We used a modern metro tile with a grey grout in this room and added some matt black bathroom fittings such as a towel ladder, toilet roll holder and soap and lotion holder for my Molten Brown toiletries.

"Space was limited in this room but we still managed to fit a huge rainfall shower over the bath which I am delighted with.

"On the floor we wanted a bold look so fitted a Victorian style floor in black and white.

"To finish it off we fitted an industrial-style scaffolding board as a feature shelf which holds a plant, face towels and my favourite Jo Malone candle in Pear and Freesia."

With an eye on the budget, Paula kept the costs down in the bedrooms by using furniture she already had, left-overs from her children's bedrooms that were no longer needed.

But that doesn't mean she skimped on style and decided to get crafty, and not just with money.

Paula says: "The first bedroom is a beautiful French Corbeille Double Antique bed which I had covered in a Clarke and Clarke fabric along with two chairs and a bureau in duck egg blue.

"The second bedroom is totally different as this is a bold black velvet sleigh bed which we have used a gorgeous Kate Spade lamp to compliment it.

"We've added bold black polka dots on one wall to complete the theme but used a casual sheep throw on the bed.

"The third room is a single room which has a crisp white and blue theme and I have used a Bronte wool throw and pillow to give it the cottage feel."

In each of these spaces Paula has used her design inspiration to great effect, giving each room its own personality, but not straying too far from the overall, light, bright and modern theme that encompasses the whole of this valleys terrace.

She says: "As you can see I haven't used just one style in any of the rooms, I've never been a fan of a home having just one strict style or theme throughout, as each member of the family will have a different idea of what they want their room to be.

"Plus styles change so frequently, does anyone really want to be re styling their home every couple of years? To me, a home should be smart but comfortable so just mix whatever style you are happy with."

As the couple both have talent in DIY and crafting, they were able to keep costs down by doing a lot of the work themselves, so the project came in at around £15,000.

Paula's main tip for keeping the budget as low as possible is to shop around.

She says: "We cut our worktop prices by about 50 percent without compromising on quality just by using eBay shops."

The couple are rightly proud of how they have breathed new life into this once dated abode, but were wondering what the world might think of it.

Paula says: "I posted photos on Facebook and couldn't believe the interest it received, especially with people asking where I bought stuff, we even had a gentleman from America interested!

"But we have decided to put the house on the market so that we are able to do another."

But before that happens, the house in its new made-over state needs to be christened.

Paula says: "My friends love the house and what has been done to it and we are hoping to have a girly get together in it when restrictions allow."

Well they'd better not spill anything on the lovely interiors when that day of the house-warming party eventually comes.
