Like Pippa Middleton's traditional lace gown, she chose a timeless hairstyle for her high-profile wedding day. The chic take on a voluminous bun was the handiwork of Pol Garcia, the artistic style director at the Marylebone salon Gielly Green, who ensured it looked picture-perfect from every angle. With and without the cathedral-length veil, the hairstyle — accessorised with a dazzling tiara — proved to be the ultimate bridal updo. Thankfully, it's relatively easy to replicate.

Mathew Soobroy, the principal stylist at Charles Worthington Salons, gave us a step-by-step guide to getting the look. So should you want to channel Mrs Matthews on your big day, take these tips to your hair trial or try them at home with a nimble-fingered friend.

1 Set the hair with rollers first to create natural volume.

2 Leaving out the top and side sections of the hair, tie the back section into a low ponytail, leaving a side parting at the front.

3 Section the ponytail into four to five individual sections, then tease each one with a brush to add more volume.

4 Roll each section towards the head and secure with pins. Repeat this with each part of the ponytail whilst placing them randomly to create the textured, bun-type effect.

5 Loosely braid the top section of hair towards one side, away from your parting, and pull this plus the side section of the hair back and into the bun you have already created.

6 Secure the hair accessories and finish with a generous amount of hairspray.
