Red's fashion director talks us through her ultimate summer city picks

Summer 2022 has come around fast – especially after two years of on-and-off normality. So while we're rejoicing at finally being able to book hot holidays, enjoy summer events and work from the office, we're also a little daunted at the prospect of dressing for them.

Luckily, Red's fashion director Oonagh Brennan is on-hand with her guide to nailing summer fashion in the city. So if you've been deliberating whether to go for another resort purchase or something more sensible that you're sure to wear again, now you can take the plunge...

Summer Monochrome

When it’s hot in the city I go for slick monochrome outfits and smart accessories. I love this season’s new architectural tops – my current go-to is a one-shoulder style paired with an A-line midi. It feels modern and minimal, but still summer-appropriate.

Lace is making a bit of a comeback this season, but the key to keeping it chic is with a boho aesthetic. The easiest way to do this is with Guipure lace, or anything woven from cotton, and by sticking to natural tones.

When it comes to up top: if you don't want to invest in a whole new outfit, pair your new purchase with any black jersey design – bandeaus, Bardot styles and anything with spaghetti straps will work, so long as the neckline is sharp!

Barely-there strappy sandals (choose a low heel for practical points) add polish while a woven tote bag keeps the look feeling summer appropriate. Strong shades and a chunky chain are the final flourish.

A one shoulder-top reveals just enough skin to be subtly sexy and looks great with jeans, tailored trousers or maxi skirts. Mint Velvet's design is made from comfy jersey, which is always a plus.

Reveal your shoulders and décolletage with the summer's strong necklines and offset with a chunky gold chain or pendant. Try layering a few necklaces together for maximum impact.

I love Farm Rio's fresh take on lace. Instead of feeling fussy and formal, this A-line midi skirt has a relaxed, Ibiza-inspired feel thanks to its cotton Giupure weave and off-white hue. Pop the matching top in your Net-a-porter basket to get three looks for the price of one.

The new sandal of summer has barely-there straps and a low "walkable" heel. The minimalist design of H&M's bargain pair really highlights the skirt's midaxi length – for an elegant flash of ankle.

The black accents running through Jigsaw's woven tote feel more city-appropriate than beachy raffia bags in natural hues. This accessory will work well in to winter, too, with dark denim, leather and cord.

Cat-eye sunglasses are perfect to partner with strong, sharp necklines and give a modern, clean finish to tailoring. These are the "It" shades of the summer but will look just as cool with a smart navy Crombie coat and black leather trousers for winter.

If you can't quite stretch to Saint Laurent's angular style, I also love Le Spec's £55 oversized cat eye shades. They're high quality for such an affordable price tag – Meghan Markle's a fan, too.
