Thetford Forest in Suffolk is one of the best man-made forests in England with a whole host of exciting activities to experience in nature. The forest is less than a 50 minute drive from Cambridge, making it the perfect summer day trip for the whole family.

High Lodge at Thetford Forest has something for everyone just waiting to be discovered. Whether you're an active sporty person, an adrenaline junkie or simply love exploring in nature - this is the place for you! The more you walk around the forest, the more you’ll find.

With play areas dotted around the forest, beautiful trails winding through rich wilderness and thrilling mountain biking opportunities, you’ll be itching to return in no time!

Activities for the kids

There is no other forest the kids could possibly enjoy more.

Adventure Golf:

A brand new activity to the High Lodge site which features 18 forest themed holes between the trees. High Lodge Adventure Golf opened in April and is bookable online or pay and play on the day - please bring cash if you wish to pay on the day.

Children's Play Area:

High Lodge is famous for its free adventurous play facilities which are great for kids of any age looking for an adventure in the forest.

From the Gruffalo, sand play area for toddlers, zip wire and maypole to the den building area, it is easy for everyone to spend a fun day out playing in the woods. Kids can make their own music in the Sound Trail, play on giant swings or climb up into the Treehouse to hide out in the canopy. Only their imagination will be the limit to the fun they can have out in the woods

Gruffalo Sculpture Trail

If you venture into the deep dark wood, you may bump into the Gruffalo from Julia Donaldson's classic story. Each wooden sculpture has been carved in a different position - can you find them all across the nation's forests?

Superworm Trail

Discover the small but mighty creatures in the much-loved story and learn about the everyday heroic feats of minibeasts in the forest. The new self-led trail features brightly illustrated panels and a trail pack full of fun activities, including your very own mask.

Set off with Superworm and become a forest superhero! Each explorer gets a trail activity pack that includes a kraft bag to colour in, forest superhero mask, seven creature facts cards and more.

Archery:

Release your inner Robin Hood with the ultimate archery experience at High Lodge Thetford. Lookout Archery provides a complete archery experience from beginners to competition archers.

They offer have-a-go, one hour lessons, group bookings, birthday parties, corporate, school visits and family days out. Archery will be onsite weekends and during school holidays throughout the year.

Back to Wilderness

This course is an introduction to the world of bushcraft, survival and wilderness living. You’ll gain a good understanding of the basic skills required to help you survive in the wilderness, but it will be down to you to practice.

This course is intended for those who wish to test themselves a little bit, by doing their own game preparation and sleeping in shelters built by their own hands.

Go Ape

There are three different options for their Go Ape options at High Lodge:

  1. Forest Segway: this is the best fun you can have off-road, on two eco-friendly wheels, without having to pedal! You will receive training and get the chance to practice before you head out, with a safari guide, on our trails. You will use a mixture of twisty trails and wide open, straight tracks on this circular, hour long adventure.
  2. Tree Top Adventure: Built for the whole family, this is the ultimate tree top experience of wobbly bridges, intricate crossings and an awesome zip wire finale in High Lodge. The perfect high ropes course for kids as well as mum, dad and the grandparents, school groups and birthday parties.
  3. Tree Top Challenge: Challenge your inner daredevil! Whether you are looking for an activity day out for your family or a corporate team building day, Go Ape Tree Top Challenge will take you to the top of the sky-scraping trees in High Lodge. Zip lines, nets, rope ladders and swings all add up to an experience you will be talking about for months. - This activity is only for adults.

Chill activities

Pine Trail:

This trail will take you on a gentle stroll through the giant pine trees at High Lodge.

Nature Trail:

This trail leads you easily through the woods to a wildlife spotting hide at the furthest point.

Heritage Trail:

The trail was constructed as part of the ‘Trailing the Hidden Heritage of High Lodge’ Project which also included research by volunteers to reveal and interpret the four thousand years of landscape history beneath the trees.

Fir Trail:

With the option to run or walk 5km, 10km or 12km this route is great for building up endurance and exploring quieter areas of the forest.

Serenity Yoga:

Come along to a Serenity Yoga Walk to release, relax and restore. If you have never done yoga before, if you love walking, if you are a avid yogi or if you just need to relax this could be the class for you.

experience the dappled sunlight through the trees upon your skin, the sound of bird song all around and breeze in your hair. Leave class feeling both cocooned in relaxation, warmth and meditation and yet exhilarated by the great outdoors.

Disk Golf:

Like golf, players navigate the 9 hole course, throwing frisbee style discs at fixed targets around our large field. Aim of the game, the player with the lowest number of total throws wins. Disc Hire is available from the Information point (card payment only): £3.00 per disc, £10.00 for 4 discs.
