We put him under the Belfast Live spotlight..

Name: David McComiskey

Role: Potter

What do you do (in 10 words or fewer)?

I'm a full-time studio potter

Three main attributes you need for the job

Good with your hands

Patience

Don't mind getting said hands dirty

Path to this position

I've studied in a fair few places, my first degree came from the Ulster University, Belfast, where I studied Contemporary Applied Art, during this time I took half a year to study at the L.M.A in Riga, Latvia in my second year. I graduated in 2016 and moved to Kilkenny for two years to study at the Dccoi's Ceramics skills and design course in Thomastown. After completing this I went to Denmark for a 5-week residency at Guldagergaard, and a yearlong residency back at Ulster University before setting up my own studio in late 2019.

What’s your dream job (present position excepted)?

That's tough because being a potter is all I've wanted since I was 19, I suppose it would be something within the crafts, a blacksmith perhaps.

What are you mos t proud of (work-wise)?

Getting to use my Art degrees five days a week.

What are you most proud of (in life)?

Setting up my own studio and having my own creative space to work.

How did the coronavirus pandemic affect your business and how did you adapt?

Loaf Pottery in Crawfordsburn is based in Loaf coffee shop and pizzeria which have been mostly closed down. I’ve had the place to myself and continued to produce. The business pivoted to on-line selling which has been hugely successful with sales across the island of Ireland. Our Loaf Pottery mugs were literally flying off the virtual shelves!

What lessons did you learn about yourself during lockdown?

I'm more comfortable in long hair and a big beard than I thought I would be.

What do you wish you had invented?

The hand gesture emojis

Favourite App on your phone

The notes section, very useful for the creative mind that never switches off.

Apart from Belfast Live and your own, what’s your favourite website?

I've spent a lot of time on the Goldmark Gallery's website over the last year, browsing through the ceramics section to add to my collection of other potters’ work.

If you were spending the day in Belfast where is your dream breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks?

General merchants for breakfast

It’s got to be the award-winning sausage rolls from Loaf Café for lunch

The Sunflower for pizza and drinks for dinner

Where’s your hidden gem in Northern Ireland?

Might not be so hidden but the Sunflower bar in Belfast is certainly a gem.

Where’s your favourite place in the world?

In the studio

How would you describe Belfast to someone who’s never been?

Compact but vibrant

In 10 years’ time I’d like to…

Have my own pottery at home in the wilderness, complete with all the kilns and equipment I could ever ask for and live as a potter hermit.
