Twenty-six Santander branches will close this month as part of a restructuring announced by the Spanish lender in March.

It follows on from 75 closures in July and 111 that will have closed across Britain by the end of summer.

Around 452 branches will remain open once the restructuring is over.

The bank said those affected are all less than three miles from another branch.

The restructuring was first announced back in March when Santander announced plans to close 111 branches in response to a surge in digital banking.

It was followed by several head office hub closures with 5,000 employees offered flexible working.

Adam Bishop at Santander, said: "Branch usage by customers has fallen considerably over recent years so we have made the difficult decision to consolidate our presence in areas where we have multiple branches relatively close together."

Elsewhere, HSBC-run Marks & Spencer is set for its biggest shake-up yet this month, as it closes all current accounts to invest in loans and credit cards.

M&S, which has 3million banking customers in the UK, said its Monthly Saver savings account - run by HSBC - will also shut in August along with in-store counters, as it switches its focus to digital banking and loans.

Its owner, HSBC has also confirmed plans to close 82 branches, as it pushes through a new counter-less service across the UK.

Tesco Bank is also shaking-up third party brands, with plans to close all personal current accounts this November because 'not enough people prioritise it'. The lender currently has 213,000 customers.

According to Which?, 3,836 branches have closed since January 2015, at a rate of around 55 each month.

This includes 20 major lenders, with NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank shutting 1,086 outlets alone.
