The hotly anticipated flagship OnePlus 8T launched but one week ago, to considerable fanfare. But what if 2020 has left you unable to justify purchasing (potentially) one of the best smartphones on the market when such a device is priced, as the 8T is, at £549 (for the 128GB version) and £649 (€699/$749) for the 256GB model? Don't fret, OnePlus has unveiled just the thing for Android lovers on a budget, and it's called the Nord N100.

Perhaps the most surprising inclusion in the N100 is the super-beefy battery. The new device features a 5000 mAh battery and an 18W fast charger to make sure it stays powered – impressive when you consider that the new 8T sports a 4500mAh power unit.

The Nord N100 is available in only one colourway (Midnight Frost) and one storage option: 4 GB of RAM to help you zip from streaming to messaging apps to calling relatives, and 64 GB of storage – but this is expandable to 256GB with the external memory card slot.

For the N100, OnePlus has stretched its 720x1600 (HD+), 269 ppi IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen to 6.52-in, to give your movies, games, and apps the screen estate they deserve.

In the sound department, the N100 sports a set of "powerful dual speakers" for a "more immersive" audio experience plus Bluetooth 5.0 – and for those of us who favour an audiophile wired headphone over the latest true wireless release, you get a 3.5mm headphone jack, too.

To drill down into that triple camera a little more, the N100 sports a 13 MP main camera, a 2 MP macro lens for getting up close and personal, and a specialised 2MP Bokeh Lens camera for portrait photos – a step down from the quad setup and 48MP main snapper found in the 8T, yes, but this is a far more affordable device.

There's also an 8MP front camera, and you'll get 1080p video capture at 30fps, 720p video at 30fps and time-lapse 1080p at 30fps.

The OnePlus Nord N100 runs on OxygenOS based on Android 10, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 chipset, so you don't get Android 11 or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. Then again, it's an awful lot of phone for just £179...

The OnePlus Nord N100 will be available in the UK in 14 days, on 10th November, but you can ask OnePlus to notify you for pre-orders. That £179 asking price works out at round $233 based on current conversion rates – and the phone will be coming to the US at some point in the near future – but OnePlus has yet to announce exactly when, and for how much. Will it feature in time for Black Friday or maybe Cyber Monday? That's highly unlikely. Then again, you never know...
