Liverpool has been transformed by film crews once again to provide the backdrop for a new Sherlock Holmes series.

Camera crews were spotted in the city centre and at the palm house in Sefton Park on two filming dates in September, as period drama props were put in place.

This makes the city one of several filming locations for the brand new detectives series The Irregulars.

The show offers a twist on the traditional Sherlock stories, by focusing on a group of crime-solving children whose work the famous detective takes credit for.

The show, which will air on Netflix, is expected to retain the original period setting of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories which were published between 1887 and 1893.

Chester was also chosen as one of the filming locations for the show, with scenes being shot in Abbey Square on September 19.

Video footage taken from outside St George's Hall on September 10, offers a sneak peek of a scene from the new drama.

Horse and carts were seen by passersby travelling down the front of St George's Plateau , along with actors and actresses dressed in period costumes.

While later in the month on September 26, camera crews were spotted again filming inside the palm house at Sefton Park.

Film crews lined the street outside the park on the day, while photos show the cast walking towards the palm house to shoot scenes for the show.

Filming is expected to last in several different locations until May 2020.

In the original Holmes stories, written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the 'Baker Street Irregulars' are a fictional group of boys who provide information for the detective from the streets of London.

In a previous interview with BBC Writersroom, Oscar-nominated writer Tom Bidwell, who is developing the series, said: “Sherlock Holmes had a group of street kids he’d use to help him gather clues, so our series is what if Sherlock was a drug addict and a delinquent and the kids solve the whole case whilst he takes credit."

This isn't the first time that the detective series has chosen Liverpool as a filming location for the show, with Robert Downey Jnr and Jude law visiting Stanley Dock back in 2011.

A third Sherlock Holmes movie starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law is also set for release in December 2020.
