A powerful hurricane off the west coast of Africa may bring heavy rain and strong winds to Merseyside.

Hurricane Helene, which is currently 1,500 miles away in the Atlantic Ocean, could have an impact on our weather as early as next week.

The Met Office also confirmed that the powerful Hurricane Florence - which is poised to hit the US - will not have any adverse impact on our weather conditions.

Grahame Madge, a Met Office spokesman, said: “Hurricane Florence is currently heading for the south-east coast of the United States and it is expected to make landfall somewhere along North Carolina, where it will bring significant winds, storm surge and rain.

“Hurricanes are intense systems helping to redistribute heat and moisture throughout the atmosphere of the northern hemisphere.

"The UK can be influenced by ex-hurricanes as we saw with Ophelia last autumn.

"However, the seas around the UK are not warm enough to sustain hurricanes and they’re always weakening if they head towards us.

“At the moment it is too early to say with any certainty what the future track of Florence will be."

But don't put your brolly away just yet, as there's bad news to come.

Merseryside could be subjected to heavy rain and strong winds as Hurricane Helene approaches.

Grahame added: “Hurricane Helene, currently well to the west of Africa, may have some potential to influence our weather next week, possibly bringing some wet and windy conditions.

"But it’s too early to say with any certainty as these systems are also influenced by the prevailing weather conditions nearer our shores.”
