Neighbours told of their terror after two men were shot in daylight on their street.

One of the victims was blasted in the stomach and another suffered a wound to his hip.

A witness heard around six gunshots on Regal Road, Croxteth , just before 6pm today.

Worried families packed the streets as an air ambulance landed on Stonebridge Lane.

People in the area told the ECHO that they were shocked and terrified by the brutal attack.

One woman said: “My neighbours heard six or seven shots and when I looked out people were gathering in the street.

“I went outside and was told someone had been shot so I took my kids back inside.”

Those living nearby told of how it was even more disappointing happening on the 12th anniversary of the murder of Rhys Jones.

The 11-year-old was shot dead just half a mile from the scene of this shooting.

One woman said: “Of all days for this to happen around here.

"It’s horrific that people have not learnt their lesson.”

Another neighbour also said: “It made me feel physically sick that this is still going on.

“If we have learnt anything its that innocent people can get caught up in these vile shootings.

“They need to get a grip of themselves and realise that normal people are being affected.”

A large police cordon was erected at the scene shortly after the shooting and is expected to remain in place for the rest of the evening.

Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Forensic officers and detectives remained inside the cordon for several hours after the shooting took place.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: “We are currently in Croxteth following reports of a firearms discharge this evening, Thursday, 22 August.
