Neighbours told of their terror as several shots were fired at a BMW X5 in Anfield last night.

Police were called to Breckside Park at just after 11pm following reports that a silver vehicle was driving off from the area at speed.

A silver BMW X5 and a Range Rover were stopped nearby and the X5 had visible gunshot damage.

The occupants of the vehicles were not injured.

Police sealed off part of Breckside Park and nearby Richmond Park as part of the investigation.

Officers could be seen carrying out fingertip searches in both roads, including the garden of a home in Breckside Park.

One woman who lives near the scene said: "The people who did this are idiots, idiots.

"I couldn't believe it when I heard they had a gun, it's scary."

A man who lives in the street said: "I was told there was a shooting but the police wouldn't tell me anything.

"There were police officers all over the place and then they closed the top of the street off.

"People couldn't get home."

Another man living on Breckside Park said: "It just makes me want to keep my head down, I don't want to be involved with whatever's gone on there.

"I saw four lads on a pedal bike and I heard a house was shot at, but I didn't hear the gunshots."

Detective Inspector Lisa Ryan said: “Enquiries are in the very early stages. I would appeal to anyone who was in the vicinity of Breckside Park last night who saw anyone or anything suspicious to contact us as they may have information which is vital to our investigation.

"I would also appeal to anyone who was driving around the area who may have dash cam footage to contact us.
