Vegans, your pastry prayers have been answered.

Greggs is launching a new vegan-friendly sausage roll just in time for Veganuary.

The menu addition comes after a campaign by animal rights group PETA, which launched a petition asking the bakery chain to introduce it.

The vegan-friendly sausage roll will hit the counters at 950 Greggs outlets nationwide, priced at £1.

It will contain a Quorn filling, wrapped inside pastry made using vegetable oil.

Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said: "Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products. We have been trying to develop a vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now.

"It has not been easy but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we have decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary."

The Veganuary campaign challenges people to try a vegan diet for a month in January, while raising awareness of the ethical, environmental and health benefits of the lifestyle.

The vegan sausage roll will be available in Manchester shops including 39 King Street West, 16 Gateway House, 36 Brazennose St, 28 Cross Street and Manchester Arndale, and will be on sale after Veganuary too.

You can find the full list of shops selling it on the Greggs website.
