Manchester United hint at plan for Daniel James' future

Daniel James remains a key part of Manchester United's squad and is in contention to start more games, says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The former Swansea winger has been deprived of regular game time this season for United but impressed in the 4-0 win over Real Sociedad, rounding off the scoring late on.

It means James has now scored in four of his past seven appearances for United — matching his tally for last season, but in far fewer games.

And Solskjaer insisted the 23-year-old is a firm part of his plans at Old Trafford, with James possibly giving the Norwegian a problem with an energetic and direct display in the Europa League victory over Sociedad.

“Dan has always been in my mind,” Solskjaer told MUTV. “Always in contention. You can see his X-factor tonight, his work-rate, his pace and his running in behind teams.

"I think he’s scored in his last couple of appearances now and he’s working every single day on improving his game so I’m delighted for him and he knows how much we value him.”

James has been subject to interest from Leeds United in recent transfer windows, the club he almost joined in January 2019 only to stay at Swansea, before United swooped that summer.

But MEN Sport understands neither the player nor United wanted a move to happen, with James continuing to battle for game time at United.

On his goal against Sociedad, Solskjaer then told BT Sport: “I'm very pleased for Dan, but every goal, it might be the last you score, so you have to celebrate every goal that you score as it deserves it. It was a good goal. I liked his decision-making, that he went all the way without looking too early for a pass.

“I’m very pleased for him. He is getting back to his best again, Dan.”
