Raheem Sterling has warned Liverpool that Manchester City will keep silently working away to close the gap at the top of the table.

Jurgen Klopp's side sit 11 points ahead of City at the top of the table having not lost a game yet during this campaign. City have overturned a 10 point deficit before and Sterling is feeling confident his side could do it again ahead of the first Manchester derby of the season.

"They’ve had a good run of form, they’re hungry to win their first title, I’m not saying we’re not hungry, but we know how strong the league is,” Sterling told  Football Focus.

"Each team every year is becoming more of a threat and I’m confident that it will be a long season and a very interesting one.

"It’s football. At moments in time it looks like you’re down and out but we work in silence and keep working and keep chipping away. Ok, they’re far ahead but we’ll let it pan out and that’s all we can do. Win our games and focus on that."

Sterling will be hoping to score against United for the first time when City welcome Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side to the Etihad on Saturday evening and he's wary of the threat they pose, despite being 11 points ahead in the table.

“We’re always fighting against each other to be the number one team in the city," Sterling said. "That’s always a great thing to do. Both teams have great players and great managers; I think this weekend we’ll show nothing less. Playing against United is always difficult and we know it’ll be a tough game.”
