Feb. 26, 1815: Napoleon Bonaparte escapes from Elba

Following his defeat in the Battle of Leipzig at the hands of the allied forces of Prussia, Austria and Russia, the French leader was exiled to the island of Elba near Tuscany, Italy, in 1814. On this day, he escaped captivity and made his way back to his homeland, seeking to regain his throne.
