Brazil Covid-19 Investigation: 'Very serious allegations against the president'

Dr. Octavio Ferraz, Reader in Transnational Law at King's College London, joins France 24 following the fallout of a Brazilian Senate investigation recommending President Jair Bolsonaro be indicted on various criminal charges for allegedly bungling Brazil’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. 'Politically, I think the report will be very significant, with electoral effects like bringing Bolsonaro even further down in the electoral polls for the elections next year,' Dr. Ferraz affirms. But as Bolsonaro has the support of his personally appointed Attorney General Augusto Aras, and has numerous allies in Congress, it is highly unlikely that the Brazilian president will ever face prosecution or impeachment. 'Legally, and in terms of impeachment,' Dr. Ferraz warns that 'it's likely that the report won't go too far, unfortunately.'
