East London plumber slapped with £1.8k fine for keeping garden riddled with vermin, pests and overgrown weeds

A heating and plumbing firm has been slapped with an almost £2,000 fine after vermin was found on its land. Enforcements officers from Barking and Dagenham Council inspected the land on April 8 this year, only to find it was overrun with foliage.

The landowner, Uptown Solutions Limited, was served with a letter to maintain the Dagenham land within 14 days. But when officers revisited - twice - on April 23 and 27 no effort had been made to order the land so a Legal Notice was served.

Another inspection took place on May 7, and the owner had ignored the warning letter and council notice, leading to the case being taken to court. It was heard at Barkingside Magistrates Court on Tuesday November 15 and as no plea was made, the defendant was found guilty.

Councillor Syed Ghani, Cabinet Member for Enforcement and Community Safety said: “This company may own the land, but we expect them to look after and maintain it. They have not only refused to do this, but completely ignored our enforcement officers.

“The land is a complete eyesore and doesn’t represent our borough well. What could have been a couple of days tidying has resulted in them having to pay a huge fine.”

Uptown Solutions Limited was ordered to pay £1,000 fine, £737 in costs to Barking and Dagenham Council and a Victim Surcharge of £100, totalling £1,837. It must be paid within 28 days.
