British Transport Police were called to the line, close to Chadwell Heath at 7.18am this morning after reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Officers are currently working to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

At 7.28 Greater Anglia's official Twitter account posted: "Due to a person hit by a train between Ilford and #Romford all lines are blocked. "Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until further notice."

The message was followed a series of other tweets warning of cancellations and delays to services along the line from Ipswich to London Liverpool Street.

Another post warned services running through Romford and Ilford "may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised" with disruption expected until further notice.

Commuter Chris Watson tweeted: "I saw 5 police cars, an ambulance and a fire appliance this morning all with blues and two's on.

"Got the bus up to #ChadwellHeath to find the #TFLRail line closed. Bus back to Becontree and late for work today."

Pictures from the scene showed several emergency vehicles including fire engines parked in Savile Road in Romford, reportedly accessing the track via West Ham's Chadwell Heath training ground.
