A lorry that burst into flames after a 'ground shaking explosion' has closed a motorway.

The M2 in Kent is closed in both directions while firefighters attempt to put out the blaze.

The truck was reportedly carrying 26-tonnes of hay when the fire started.

Thick plumes of black smoke are being sent across the coast bound carriage way of the M2 between junction 2 for Rochester and junction 3.

The motorway is not expected to reopen until at least 3pm and drivers are being advised to avoid the area.

A 'huge bang' heard by witnesses was the lorry's tyres exploding in the heat, firefighters said.

One witness said: "Whatever it is is under the bridge at the top of bluebell hill but it was a ground shaking explosion."

A bridge that the lorry was underneath will have to be inspected before the road can reopen, police confirmed.

A Kent Police spokesman said they were called at 11.44am and 'no injuries' were reported.

He added: "The M2has been closed in both directions at Junction 3 following the lorry fire.

"The bridge will also be closed due to the fire and will need to be assessed before being reopened."

A Kent Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "Motorists are advised to avoid the area due to large black smoke on the motorway."

Crews are using hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze.

It is not known if anyone was injured and the cause of the fire is not yet known.
