Eel spotted swimming along flooded Bournemouth pathway

While walking his dog in Bournemouth Gardens recently, Matt Noah Smith had some unusual company, in the form of an eel that was swimming along a partially flooded stretch of footpath. “Bournemouth Gardens has a stream running through it,” Smith told Storyful, “I assume the eel was attempting to return to the North Atlantic to breed.” The local council reported localized flooding in Bournemouth on September 24, a day after this video was recorded. Mike Blackmore, of the Wessex Rivers Trust, commented on a version of the video on Twitter, saying, “The eel isn’t in the wrong place, the gardens are! #floodplain.” Credit: Matt Noah Smith via Storyful
