Michael Lewis, of Rhyl, Wales, suffered head injuries the island’s capital of Santa Cruz on Tuesday and died on Thursday.

A man, thought to be a tourist, is being questioned by Tenerife in connection with the attack, Birmingham Live reported.

Michael's auntie, Karen Hughes claims he was "attacked randomly in the street when he went to get some food".

She told the Rhyl Journal: "Michael was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and now has been taken away from his family.

"He didn't have a bad bone in his body, he was always the person to step back and walk away.

"There's nothing bad to say about him, he was the life and soul of the party and was so funny. It's a total waste of a life."

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “Our staff are supporting the family of a British man following his death in Tenerife, and we are liaising with the Spanish police.”

Dozens of loving tributes have been left in memory Michael.

One of his friends who'd been on the holiday with him said: “Being with you on this holiday has been a privilege, being your friend means more, we will truly miss you mate and we will get justice for you. Sleep tight Brillo mate.

Another tribute said: “You were always polite and respectful. I’m so gutted to be writing this.”

“You were such a lovely caring person and we’ve had many laughs. Sleep tight beautiful,” read a third.

Another friend wrote: “A lovely man with a cracking smile. You always put a smile on my face, even when you were winding me up. Stolen from us at 23. We live in such a terrible cruel world. Rest easy fella, I’ll never forget ya.”

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise £5,000 to pay for Michael's funeral.
