How many US school shootings have there been in 2022? Full list of mass shootings after 21 killed in Texas

The i 25/05/2022 Alex Finnis

At least 19 children have been killed by an 18-year-old gunman in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.

Two adults were also killed in the assault at Robb Elementary School, one of whom was a teacher.

It is the deadliest shooting at a US school since a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, in December 2012.

The shooter has been identified as local resident Salvador Ramos. No motive has been revealed, but law enforcement officials said he acted alone. He was shot dead by officers.

The first victims have been named as eight-year-old Uziyah Garcia, 10-year-old Xavier Javier Lopez and teachers Eva Mireles and Irma Garcia.

Ramos also shot his grandmother before heading to the school. She survived and is being treated in hospital.

The attack came just 10 days after a deadly, racist rampage at a Buffalo, New York, supermarket that added to a year-long series of mass killings at churches, schools and stores.

How many US mass shootings have there been in 2022?

Mass shootings are incidents involving several victims of firearm-related violence.

There is no universally accepted criteria for what qualifies as a mass shooting, but many US organisations, such as the non-profit Gun Violence Archive and the Congressional Research Service, define it as an incident in which four or more people, excluding the perpetrator, are shot at one location at roughly the same time.

By this metric, there have been 248 mass shootings in the US so far in 2022, killing more than 250 people.
