Joe Biden's inauguration is set to be like no other in US history.

Thousands of heavily armed National Guard troops have been deployed as part of unprecedented security measures, amid fears of homemade bomb threats and an attempt by Donald Trump supporters to repeat their attack on the Capitol.

America is a tinderbox right now, with Donald Trump's constant refusal to accept the election result, and his inflammatory rhetoric in the days leading up to the storming of Capitol Hill has resulted in him being impeached for a historic second time for "incitement of insurrection".

Combine that with the coronavirus pandemic - which continues to show no signs of slowing down in the US - and viewers can expect to see a very different inauguration.

There won't be hundreds of thousands of people on Washington DC's National Mall as it will be closed to the public over fears of violent protests.

Neither will there be a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue.

When is the inauguration?

Joe Biden will be sworn in as the 46th President of the United States on Wednesday.

The ceremony will begin at 4.30pm UK time (11.30am local time), and Biden is expected to take the oath of office at around 5pm in the UK (12pm local time).

Lady Gaga will sing the national anthem during, and Jennifer Lopez will also perform at the ceremony.

News channels including BBC and Sky will be providing coverage from around 4pm, along with the major US networks.

A series of balls are usually put on in the US capital, but this year they will be replaced by a 90-minute TV broadcast called "Celebrating America".

The American prime-time show will be hosted by Tom Hanks and feature performances from the likes of Justin Timberlake, Bon Jovi and Demi Lovato and begin at 1.30am UK time on Thursday January 22.

"Celebrating America" will be available to watch on ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC and MSNBC, the Presidential Inauguration Committee's Facebook, YouTube and Twitch channels, and Amazon Prime.
