Football fans in Miami were treated to a Lionel Messi masterclass last week.

The 35-year-old’s Argentina side played Honduras in a World Cup warm-up match at the Hard Rock Stadium.

And Messi made sure everyone in attendance got value for their money. The Paris Saint-Germain superstar scored twice in a 3-0 win for La Albiceleste, with his second goal of the night a masterpiece.

Even Argentina’s bench was left with stunned looks on their faces after Messi elegantly chipped the ball over Honduras goalkeeper Luis Lopez from around 30 yards out.

In the days after his dazzling performance against Honduras, which saw him move to 88 goals on the international stage, Messi paid a visit to Inter Miami’s training facility.

The MLS outfit went full ‘fanboy’ mode in response to Messi’s arrival, with the Argentine selflessly taking time to pose for pictures with a number of the players and staff.

Messi made their days and that assessment couldn’t be truer when it comes to Inter Miami goalkeeper, Francisco Ranieri.

The Argentine, who was previously on the books at Club Atletico Lanus, asked Messi if he could sign his left arm to commemorate the meet and greet.

Messi duly obliged and after the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s visit was over, Ranieri decided to make the signature on his arm permanent.

The ‘keeper showed off his new tattoo to the world in an Instagram post, during which he said: “The best day of my life. Yesterday, I fulfilled a dream.”

Fair play, Francisco. Messi’s popularity in the footballing sphere is virtually unrivaled, with perhaps only Cristiano Ronaldo on the same sort of level.

Can Messi and Argentina win the 2022 World Cup?

With Messi in sparkling form, Lionel Scaloni’s side are going to be a serious threat out in Qatar later this year.

Argentina are currently on a 34-game unbeaten run and lifted a trophy just over a year ago at the 2021 Copa America.

They’ve got a taste for winning and have a squad loaded with talent, which is a recipe for success in any team sport.

Argentina’s group at the World Cup is far from the easiest, though. They will do battle with Mexico, Poland and Saudi Arabia in the tournament’s opening round.

Even for a team in superb nick, Mexico and Poland will almost certainly be far from ‘pushovers’ – unless Messi produces a madness that is.
