If Celtic are to keep their hopes alive of progressing into the knockout stages of the Europa League, then they need to get something from Thursday's trip to Group G leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

However, that isn't going to be easy and one glance at the odds tells its own tale. The Hoops are 5/1 to earn all three points in the Bay Arena while the hosts, who have yet to lose a game in this qualifying campaign, are red-hot 4/9 favourites.

The clubs' first encounter in UEFA club competition, in Glasgow on Matchday 2, left Celtic smarting from their heaviest ever home defeat in the UEFA Europa League/UEFA Cup as the visitors ran in four unanswered goals from Piero Hincapie, Wirtz, Lucas Alario (penalty) and Amine Adli.

However, that doesn't tell the whole story. Ange Postecoglou's side actually racked up more shots than their German opposition in that Parkhead clash but were let down badly by some distinctly ordinary finishing.

That Matchday 2 defeat was the only Europa League match that Celtic have failed to score in this term, indeed they have scored three in two of their remaining three fixtures, so they head to Germany knowing full well that they are capable of causing Leverkusen problems.

This is a Leverkusen side that have shipped ten goals in six home Bundesliga matches and even Ferencvaros, who have managed just four goals in the qualifying campaign, managed to break down the Leverkusen rearguard in their 2-1 defeat in September.

Prediction for Leverkusen vs Celtic

Celtic have won just four of their 25 matches against German opposition, losing 16, and have yet to record a victory on German soil in 12 visits (D3 L9). They failed to score in nine of those matches including the most recent, a 0-2 defeat at RB Leipzig in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League group stage.

However, this is a Celtic side going very well, so much so that since that 4-0 defeat in the reverse fixture, they have won eight of their nine matches and racked up 19 goals.

Their scoring record in Germany might be horrific, but they go into this fixture brimming with confidence and Leverkusen have already lost three times on their own patch in the Bundesliga this term.

With that in mind, goals don't look a bad play here. Both teams to score is a 7/10 chance with Grosvenor Sport but we can boost that to even money if we combine it with over 2.5 goals, which there have been in three of Leverkusen's four Europa League matches this term.

Recommended bet: Over 2.5 goals and both teams to score (yes) - Evens
