Birmingham City linked with midfielder as Lee Bowyer offers transfer update

Message to Fran

Lee Bowyer saw plenty of his Birmingham City squad in action on Tuesday, including the lesser spotted Fran Villalba, whose role in this group is still uncertain.

The Spaniard was afforded 15 minutes at the end of the friendly game with Barrow at Wast Hills on Tuesday to showcase his abilities

Villalba had spent last season on loan with Almeria, and returned to his parent club this summer not knowing what lay in store for him, but Bowyer is looking at the bigger picture and he’s not denying any player an opportunity to impress him..

“I’m open minded to everybody - the young lads, Fran, Jutkiewicz, everybody,” he added. “All I ask them to do is go onto the pitch and do well and persuade me that you’re the one who should be playing on the first game of the season.

Transfer update

Birmingham City might have already sealed the arrivals of seven new faces - but don’t bet against Lee Bowyer bringing in another one or two additions to his squad before the transfer window closes.

Blues have rather caught many clubs in the same boat as them off guard by striking quickly this summer. In Ryan Woods, Jordan Graham and Chuks Aneke, they quickly snaffled a number of experienced free agents.

On top of that, Bowyer and his technical director Craig Gardner used their contacts book to land Tahith Chong, Juan Castillo and Dion Sanderson - Matija Sarkic could soon follow.

Eric Junior Dina Ebimbe, the midfielder from Paris Saint-Germain, has been linked with a move to Birmingham City.

Ebimbe, 20, was loaned out to PSG’s Ligue 1 rivals Dijon last season, and he made 30 appearances, including 25 starts, but despite impressing in what was a relegated outfit, it appears that he has little chance of breaking into Mauricio Pochettino’s plans in the forthcoming season.

Foot Mercato claim that Blues are among six sides from around Europe who are keen on taking Ebimbe for the new season, and that list of clubs includes Championship rivals Nottingham Forest and Bristol City.

Talking points

Birmingham City dominated their second pre-season game with League Two Barrow before being pegged back in the dying seconds by a familiar face.

Gary Gardner, who this week signed a new contract at Blues that will run until 2024, scored his second goal of the pre-season campaign to put Lee Bowyer’s side ahead before ex-Wast Hills kid Remeao Hutton equalised at the death.

There were impressive performances from defensive young pair Marcel Oakley and Tate Campbell, before Bowyer turned to his first team in the second period and, prior to Hutton’s surprise leveller, their experience and quality told.

Blues looked solid defensively throughout and trialist goalkeeper Matija Sarkic had pretty much nothing to do before picking the ball out of his net.

Ready to go

Birmingham City have reportedly "agreed" to sign goalkeeper Matija Sarkic from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Athletic report that a loan deal has been struck between Blues and Wolves to sign Sarkic, who played in a friendly for Lee Bowyer's side against Cheltenham Town on Saturday, for the upcoming season.

Sarkic has been on trial with Blues after linking up with Bowyer's side last week and has been brought in to mitigate the absence of Neil Etheridge, who was in hospital because of coronavirus.

Etheridge has since returned home but is likely to be out for an extended period of time as he recovers from the illness.
