Jerry Jones Announces The Cowboys' Plan At Kicker
A handful of eliminated NFL teams have no idea who will begin the 2023 season as their kicker.
The Dallas Cowboys have plenty of other issues to address this offseason, but their kicker situation will draw magnified scrutiny following Brett Maher's postseason struggles. After a strong season back in Dallas, Maher missed four extra points in their first-round win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and had another point-after try blocked in their Divisional Round loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Jerry Jones stood by Maher after his disastrous evening at Tampa Bay, but he's not committing long-term to any kicker. The owner told reporters Wednesday that he's "going back to the drawing board" and starting over.
Maher returned to the Cowboys after one year out of the league and one season with the New Orleans Saints. He made 50 of 53 extra points during the regular season and only missed three field goals, all further than 40 yards.
But few kickers receive any loyalty. Even if the 33-year-old didn't unravel in the playoffs, the Cowboys might have signed or drafted someone else anyway.
Dallas signed Maher last August rather than giving the job to Jonathan Garibay or Lirim Hajrullahu. The Cowboys could again find a new kicker in training camp this summer.
