The BBC has finally confirmed the release date of the upcoming Doctor Who Easter special.

'Legend of the Sea Devils' will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday, April 17.

The episode will mark the second in a trilogy of Doctor Who specials airing throughout 2022.

Not only that, but 'Legend of the Sea Devils' also marks the penultimate outing for Jodie Whittaker's Doctor.

The Sea Devils are terrifying ocean-dwelling monsters that made their first appearance on the show in the 1972 episode 'The Sea Devils', where they battled against Jon Pertwee's Doctor.

However, fans haven't seen them on-screen since their last appearance in 1984.

In 'Legend of the Sea Devils', the Doctor (Jodie), Yaz (Mandip Gill) and Dan (John Bishop) travel to 19th century China where they stumble upon a little coastal village under threat from the pirate queen Madame Ching (Crystal Yu) and the monstrous Sea Devils she unleashed on the world.

Meanwhile, Jodie announced that she would be stepping down from her role as The Doctor last year in an emotional statement:

"In 2017 I opened my glorious gift box of size 13 shoes. I could not have guessed the brilliant adventures, worlds and wonders I was to see in them. My heart is so full of love for this show, for the team who make it, for the fans who watch it and for what it has brought to my life. And I cannot thank Chris enough for entrusting me with his incredible stories. We knew that we wanted to ride this wave side by side and pass on the baton together.

"So here we are, weeks away from wrapping on the best job I have ever had. I don't think I'll ever be able to express what this role has given me. I will carry the Doctor and the lessons I've learnt forever."

She added: "I know change can be scary and none of us know what's out there. That's why we keep looking. Travel Hopefully. The Universe will surprise you. Constantly."

Doctor Who will air two more specials later this year on BBC One in the UK. In the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max.
