Ammonite is a brand new drama loosely inspired by the life of British palaeontologist Mary Anning ( Kate Winslet ), and her romantic relationship with Charlotte Murchison ( Saoirse Ronan ).

Of course, as Mary Anning is famed for the fossils she discovered along the coast at Lyme Regis in West Dorset, it seems fitting that this was exactly where cast and crew headed to film scenes.

According to Visit Dorset, the town of Lyme Regis was given an 1800s makeover for filming, including Georgian house fronts being erected in front of some of the local buildings.

For example, the Bell Cliff restaurant served as one of the main location, with a fake facade put in place to transport it back to the 1800s.

Meanwhile, local businesses along Coombe Street were transformed for both interior and exterior scenes, including two stores from the 1840s and a stable yard.

Other destinations such as harbour The Cobb were also given a 19th century makeover to create a backdrop while Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan filmed scenes. Historic sailing ships were brought for filming to create an even more authentic feel to the drama.

Of course the Jurassic coast played a huge part in Mary Anning's life, so it's no surprise that the region's beautiful beaches also made an appearance for scenes in which Mary searches for fossils.

Eype Beach was used for a picnic scene starring the leading actors, while Charmouth Beach 's picturesque sands also made for an appearance.

If you're looking to visit for yourself, there are guided 'fossil walks' available so you too can seek out the hidden history amidst the rugged coast.
