Israel introduces tracking bracelets for quarantined travellers

Israel is handing out electronic tracking bracelets made to monitor incoming travelers during quarantine. The pilot programme kicked off at Ben Gurion airport on March 1. Instead of staying at a state-administered hotel, bracelet wearers can wait out mandatory quarantine in their own homes. The device does not reveal the exact location of the wearer, but alerts authorities if participants remove the bracelet or venture too far from the home monitor. Critics say it is an invasion of privacy. The day the project was launched, Israel’s top court ruled, that the government must stop using its domestic spy agency to track the spread of coronavirus, calling the surveillance ‘draconian’.
