Green-fingered monks at the Valaam Monastery in Russia’s freezing north-western Republic of Karelia, harvest their own pineapples. The monks of the Valaam Monastry, also known as the Athos of the North, already grow mango, papaya, avocado, passion fruit and bananas. Founded around 500 years ago, farming at Valaam can be traced back to 1810.
