Lyme Disease: Best Tips For Coping With Disease

Nearly 82 percent of all tickborne cases are attributed to Lyme disease caused by ticks of bacteria called Borrelia burgdorferi, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC). This does not include other accounts that go unreported, however. 

According to data from various laboratories, approximately 300,000 Americans are infected by Lyme disease, which is about eight to 10 more than the national aggregate. 

Supermodel Bella Hadid has been open about her battles with the condition that has been the subject of  much controversy. Hadid is resistant to the antibiotics that treat the disease, similar to the 10 percent of people who are not able to overcome it with medications. This stage is called the Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS) by the CDC. 

While the main symptoms are muscle pain, fatigue and short-term memory loss, there is no blood test to identify it. Since the condition is chronic, there is much debate among doctors about the length of the treatment with antibiotics a PTLDS patient is allowed to undergo. 

Hadid herself confessed to seeking alternative treatment, along with her brother and mother, Anwar and Yolanda Hadid, who have Lyme disease too. The condition comes with a lot of mental stress that needs to be dealt with on a regular basis. Sufferers might feel hopeless and emotionally compromised.

In a recent article on Psychology Today, Dr. Joseph Trunzo, who is the chair of the department of psychology at Bryant University, shed light on how to manage the psychological aspect of Lyme disease. In a nutshell, the tips he gave are as follows. 

Do not let thoughts ruin your day

It is easy to get swept away by the spiral of negative thoughts and lose concentration of the present moment. Instead of obsessively contemplating about never feeling well again, it would be more helpful to figure out if these thoughts are useful to moving forward. Engage in thoughts that aid productivity, however, do not try to control your thoughts, but only observe them. 

Keep yourself engaged

Lyme disease can limit your activity to some extent, so do not beat yourself up for taking some rest. Try to find leisure, work and activities with loved ones that help engage you in functional and meaningful behavior. 

Understand how this affects your family

Seeing a loved one suffer could take a toll on your close family members. So, try and understand their equation with your illness.Work with them as a team to find the emotional support you need. 

Constantly seek to educate yourself
