With Maura Higgins calling it quits with boyfriend Chris Taylor there have been plenty of high profile separations over the last two decades.

In fact, over 20 years, there have been some shocking Irish celebrity splits from Ronan Keating and Yvonne Connolly to Una Healy and Ben Foden.

There were many couples that had fans convinced they were made to last, alas not everything you see on paper is as it seems — some relationships just don’t work out while others are rocked by affairs.

Extra.ie takes a look back at some of the biggest Irish celebrity splits of the last 20 years.

The pair enjoyed some years together and were often snapped cosying up to one another, along with showing off their good humour at various appearances.

It wasn’t meant to be and they split in 2005, with the former Xpose star telling the RTE Guide in 2008: ‘Both of us got to the stage where we ended it. Of course, you’re always sad to finish with someone. You just pick yourself up and get over it.’

‘He has a great life and I’ve got on with my own and I enjoy what I’m at. We wouldn’t have done it (split up), I doubt, if we were happy with it,’ she continued.

‘I just needed answers. I just needed the truth, and I needed to make sure stories collaborated. It was very hard to figure out who you can trust. So this was the answer to it — I was going to meet this girl, a quick 20-minute conversation, and we’d be done and dusted.

‘And in fairness to her, she came and met me. But the 20-minute conversation turned into a couple of bottles of wine and hours later.’

At the time of buying their house, Aoibhinn said: ‘Ryan and I are living together and are very happy. We have no plans. We’re happy just doing what we are doing.’

Despite the private romance, Ryan’s fame as host of The Late Late Show made the break-up major showbiz news in Ireland.

At the end of 2014, a statement issued by Noel Kelly, whose company NK Management acts as representation for the couple said: ‘Aoibhinn and Ryan are no longer together.’

It appears the pair are still on good terms as Ryan recently praised Aoibhinn for speaking out about her experience of being harassed by a UCD colleague.

He said: ‘[It was] amazing to see Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin coming out at the weekend in her interview and talking about harassment in college at UCD, outlining a two-year ordeal there.

‘[She was] harassed by a colleague which she describes as a horrific experience.

For 10 years, lawyer Gerald Kean and reality star Lisa Murphy enjoyed an on-off relationship that gripped the Irish showbiz world.

The pair met in 2006 through mutual friends in the Ice Bar of the Four Seasons Hotel — now the InterContinental — in Ballsbridge, Dublin.

Their love blossomed in December 2009 when Gerald popped the question and asked Lisa to marry him, gifting her a beautiful Sotheby’s diamond ring.

Sadly, their wedding had to be put on hold following a robbery at their Co Wicklow home in May, 2011, in which the ringwas taken.

During the ordeal, four masked men pushed their way into the isolated house near Brittas Bay as Lisa deactivated an alarm on arriving home shortly after 8pm.

Gerald was not home a the time of the incident, arriving around 10pm and hearing Lisa screaming. He found her tied to a chair in an upstairs bedroom of their property.

Gerald was keen to find the ‘perfect’ ring to replace the one that was stolen, telling the Irish Daily Star later: ‘It’s tough because we had the perfect ring picked out and now we’re trying to pick out another one, which isn’t easy in this day and age.

‘The wedding has gone back to next year. We have a lot on and particularly with the robbery, we need to replace the ring.’

Both Roz Purcell and Bressie were major Irish stars in their own right at the time of their relationship.

When their romance began in 2013 — with secret dates — Bressie was part of one of Ireland’s most popular bands, The Blizzards, while Roz was one of Ireland’s top models following her win at Miss Universe Ireland.

For anyone in the public eye, it’s tough to keep secret relationships as such for long, and one photographer snapped Roz following Bressie indoors — which was enough for Irish media to say they were an item.

Shortly after, in September 2013, Bressie addressed their relationship and admitted it was ‘still very early days’, adding: ‘We don’t want to put pressure on ourselves … She’s lovely, a real sweetheart.’

Their breakup appeared amicable as the Tipperary woman shared the news on her social media alongside a black and white photo of the two, writing: ‘Myself and Niall decided to end our relationship some time ago. We are still friends & love each other very much. We won’t be saying anything else about it so appreciate if you could respect that.’

To the outside world, it was a shock. Speaking about the split later, Roz said: ‘There’s actually no story to it, people keep looking for one, we just both decided to break up and that’s it.’

The Natural Born Feeder founder is now dating Zach Desmond after their friends decided to set them up without their knowledge at a festival. They live together in South Dublin — and Roz also likes to keep that relationship private, very rarely sharing moments with her boyfriend.

In 2017, a year on from the split, Bressie opened up about how hard the breakup had been on him saying he didn’t ‘have the heart’ to put himself out there again.

He said at the time: ‘I just want to keep my head and look after myself and everything.’

It wasn’t by chance that Una Healy and Ben Foden became an item; it was because the rugby ace had seen the singer on TV while in a pub with his agent.

‘He asked if there was anyone I was thinking about, then The Saturdays popped up on the music channel in the corner, and I said, “Oh, the one with the blue tights”,’ he told Attitude.

‘And the next thing I know, I’ve got a text saying, “She’s expecting your call”.’
